Taryn Stratten – Owner & Head Coach

10th July 2017 by Taryn Leave a Comment

Three words to describe yourself:
Passionate, determined, independent!

Why CrossFit?
After years of doing the normal gym “stuff” … cardio, back and bi’s, chest and tri’s, leg day, spin classes, ab crunches…. I was bored, unhappy and no longer seeing results. Within a few months of starting CrossFit I saw noticeable physical changes. My body composition changed, I was the same weight, but I looked leaner. I had lost weight and gained more muscle. I felt stronger, faster and more mobile. Along with the physical changes I also gained self confidence and I was more motivated in my everyday life and job. The variety, intensity and scalability of CrossFit has kept me challenged and steadily improving. All while having FUN!

One thing that surprised me about CrossFit was how much I loved joining in a fitness class. The camaraderie amongst everyone in class and the CrossFit community was overwhelming. There were no egos, no bad attitudes, it was just hard work and in a supportive environment that can’t be faked.

Why Coach?
It is FUN and it is in my blood. Simply put, I love connecting with people. Being able to provide them with the right tools to achieve their goals and share in their excitement when they succeed is extremely rewarding.

I love helping people overcome their fears, push through and embrace the uncomfortable and discover they are capable of more than they think.

Favourite WOD?
A combination of a heavy barbell and challenging gymnastics movements. And why not add some burpees in there to make it even better.

Least Favourite WOD?
Any WOD with rowing or the Assault Bike.

Top Coaching Tip:
Enjoy the process and spend time on the little things. There will be plenty of ups and downs on your lifelong fitness journey, so enjoy the ride and remember to have FUN.

I feel like a broken record these days telling this to people. One of the things I appreciate about CrossFit is the constant desire and goal to find the best possible stimulus and adaptation to improve our fitness. If you look at the evolution of workouts from the early 2000's till now they are quite different. One of the places I think our entire community can grow is the thought process, expectations on self or others, and ego on "RX". It's old school terminology in our gym and we often don't hear it anymore because the truth is you are going to gain more fitness over time if you maintain the stimulus of the workout. If programmed well, the intensity is often one of the main goals of a workout. Even if it's at varying levels. And if you went to your L1 you know that intensity is what gives you results. If you maintain this my bet is you have more longevity, more results, and more fun!⠀
